Gear Review: Flash 2.0

Gear Review: Flash 2.0

Jetboil Ambassador Sarah Blair shares how her family uses Jetboil Flash 2.0 for their overnight and multi day adventures.

How long have you had your Jetboil?

Our family has been using the Jetboil Flash 2.0 for the last two years and don’t know where we would be without it. You can’t beat a hot brew when you’re breaking for lunch during a long day's hike or when you finally reach your destination.

Is it easy to use?

Okay, I’ll be honest with you. I’m one of those people who HATES gas, I don’t know why I’m so afraid of it (some childhood fear perhaps?) but whenever we use gas at home or change BBQ bottles etc I will always get someone else to do it. You can laugh, I really don’t mind. I know I’m not the only one, so if you also have a little gas fear lurking around, you can rest easy knowing this Jetboil business is a piece of cake!

How well does it perform?

The Flash 2.0 is SUCH a performer, even in the wind and rain. I remember the first time I used it, it was on a walk in the middle of Winter and the thought of a hot cuppa at the top was keeping us going. Upon reaching the summit the wind was picking up and I was nervous we wouldn’t get our delicious drink after all but boy was I wrong! The Jetboil handled the wind no problem, and has done so every time since.

Is the Jetboil Flash 2.0 as fast as they say?

When it comes to dinners on an overnighter or multi day trip, we will quite often buy freeze dried meals. Even if there are quite a few of us, thanks to the Flash 2.0 we can get our water boiled for dinner in no time. Ha it makes me think of that time of the evening, you know, when everyone in the hut is preparing dinner? I see people hauling out their big and bulky cookers and we’ve already finished eating! The convenience of a Jetboil just makes total sense.

How compact is the Flash 2.0?

I tend to be a bit of a weakling so I like my pack to be as light as I can get it! And the Flash is not only light, but compact. It can literally fit everything inside the actual cup and this is what sold it for me when I was shopping around.

It can be a little daunting trying to find the right gear. When I was starting out, I had on my list to buy a cooker and a pot BUT when I came across Jetboil and saw that I could keep my cooker, gas and stand all inside the cup of the Flash 2.0 and simply throw it into my pack… it was a no brainer.

What if you don’t use Freeze Dried meals?

We have recently got our hands on the Minimo and will be putting it through its paces soon when we head out on a multi day adventure. We plan to take fresh ingredients for the first two days so we look forward to seeing how the simmer control works (I hear it’s rather awesome). Having the two Jetboils with us will also be a handy backup for anyone who wants to do any side trips along the way.

Which Jetboil Should I Choose?

The Jetboil website is full of information and all the different specs, they even have a handy ‘Stove Finder Quiz’ to help you find the right one! Choosing the right one will come down to a variety of things so make sure you check the quiz out.

I should add that Jetboil has fantastic customer service, and their videos on their website are super helpful too. They cover things like the correct way to pack your Jetboil, backcountry recipes and troubleshooting. So make sure you check these out, you might discover something you didn’t even know you needed.
